Empowering Women: The Key to a Brighter Future on International Women's Day

At Fordham-Rees Podiatry we promote and support International Women's Day which is a celebration of women's achievements and advocacy for gender equality. It is a day to recognize the struggles women face in their everyday lives and to promote women empowerment. Women empowerment is the process of giving women the tools and resources to take control of their lives and achieve their goals. It is the key to a brighter future for women and society as a whole. In my blog, we will explore the importance of women empowerment, the current state of gender equality, and the role of education in empowering women. We will also discuss how I, a woman myself, empower women in my workplace and what I believe is the need for men's involvement in women empowerment.

What is Women Empowerment?

Women empowerment is the process of giving women the tools and resources to take control of their lives and achieve their goals. It involves promoting women's rights and equality, reducing gender-based violence, and increasing women's participation in the decision-making processes. Women empowerment is not just about giving women equal opportunities, but also about creating an environment that supports women's growth and development. At Fordham-Rees Podiatry I ensure that our clinic does just that, and taking onboard a new female employee, offering her the support and development plan to ensure her success in our podiatry clinic.

Importance of Women Empowerment for a Brighter Future

Female empowerment is important because it helps to reduce gender inequality and promote economic development. When women are empowered, we are better able to contribute to their families, communities, and societies. We are more likely to pursue education and job opportunities, which can lead to increased income and improved standards of living. Female empowerment also helps to promote gender equality, which is essential for achieving sustainable development.

Furthermore, women empowerment is essential for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The Sustainable Development Goals are a set of 17 goals that aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. Many of these goals are directly related to women empowerment, such as gender equality, quality education, and decent work and economic growth. By empowering women, we can help to achieve these goals and create a brighter future for all.

The Current State of Gender Equality

Despite progress in recent years, gender inequality remains a significant issue worldwide. I have noticed an improvement in the UK but it is still a major issue worldwide. Women still face discrimination and violence in many areas of their lives, including education, employment, and politics. According to the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report 2020, it will take another 99.5 years to close the gender gap completely, a figure that I find extremely shocking and disappointing, but its the reality of the world we live in.

In some countries, women are not allowed to vote, own property, or even leave their homes without a male guardian. I could not imagine losing those freedoms, freedoms which I have come to take for granted and which many other women in the world do not have and may never have, it makes me really sad to think that many women in the world are treated without the same rights as men, just because of gender. Women also earn less than men and are underrepresented in leadership positions. Gender-based violence is also a significant issue, with one in three women experiencing physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. These statistics highlight the urgent need for women empowerment and gender equality.

How to Empower Women in the Workplace

Empowering women in the workplace is essential for achieving gender equality and promoting women's economic development. Here are some ways I and you too can empower women in the workplace:

  1. Provide equal opportunities: Women should have equal access to job opportunities, promotions, and training.

  2. Create a supportive environment: Employers should create a supportive environment that encourages women to succeed and provides them with the tools they need to do so.

  3. Offer flexible work arrangements: Women often have caregiving responsibilities, and flexible work arrangements can help them balance work and family responsibilities.

  4. Address gender bias: Employers should address gender bias in the workplace and ensure that women are not discriminated against based on their gender.

  5. Increase representation: Employers should aim to increase the representation of women in leadership positions and on company boards.

By empowering women in the workplace, we can help to create a more equitable and inclusive society.

The Role of Education in Women Empowerment

Education is a critical factor in empowering women and promoting gender equality. Education gives women the knowledge and skills they need to participate in social, economic, and political life. It also helps to reduce gender-based violence and promotes women's health and wellbeing.

Studies have shown that educating girls can have a significant impact on economic development. Educated girls are more likely to earn higher wages, have smaller families, and invest in their children's education. They are also more likely to participate in decision-making processes and advocate for their rights.

Furthermore, education can help to break the cycle of poverty and empower women to take control of their lives. By providing girls with equal access to education, we can help to promote women empowerment and gender equality.

The Need for Men's Involvement in Women Empowerment

Men's involvement in women empowerment is crucial for achieving gender equality. Men have a significant role to play in creating a more equitable and inclusive society. They can help to challenge gender stereotypes, advocate for women's rights, and promote women's empowerment. At our podiatry clinic our Clinic Manager is a man, he promotes women's rights and is an advocate for empowering women, especially in our podiatry clinic. The business is jointly shared by myself and Brynmor, and we have so far hired 2 women into our workplace.

Men can also be powerful allies in the fight against gender-based violence. They can speak out against violence and support survivors. They can also model positive behaviors and attitudes towards women, which can help to create a culture of respect and equality.

Furthermore, men's involvement in women empowerment can help to break down gender barriers and promote gender equality. By working together, men and women can create a more equitable and inclusive society.

Conclusion: The Future of Women Empowerment and Gender Equality

Women empowerment is the key to a brighter future for women and society as a whole. It promotes gender equality, reduces poverty, and creates a more inclusive and sustainable society. However, there is still much work to be done to achieve gender equality. We must continue to advocate for women's rights, promote women empowerment, and challenge gender stereotypes and biases.

By working together, we can create a more equitable and inclusive society where women are empowered to achieve their full potential. This International Women's Day, let us celebrate women's achievements and renew our commitment to gender equality.
